Max George has revealed that his 'serious drinking problem' was the reason he and ex-fiancée Michelle Keegan split up.

The popstar says that Corrie star Michelle, 26, couldn't handle his drinking and called off their engagement three months before the news of their split went public.

Speaking to The Sun, Max, 25, said: 'I had a real problem with drinking too much and that was, without doubt, the downfall of our relationship.

The couple were together for two years, both hailing from Manchester, and Max proposed to her in June 2012 after a year together, however during that time, he admits to not even remembering moments of their relationship because of his nightly drinking.

'I was drinking more to forget the fact I was with someone who wasn't making me that happy,' Max explains. 'Michelle is seen as like Britain's Sweetheart nowadays, I understand it might have looked as if there was something to hide, [but] there was no betrayal in terms of cheating.'

At the time of their split it was widely reported that The Wanted star had cheated on Michelle after a picture was published of him kissing a blonde woman on a night out in Newcastle, but Max makes it clear that they had split up two months earlier.

George admits that their engagement may have been an overzealous commitment too: 'I tried to kid myself it would work out OK, but the moment she said she didn't want to be engaged anymore I know that something was wrong. It was a whirlwind. I don't regret it because you shouldn't regret anything you do. You learn.'

Since his split from the Coronation Street star, Max has been linked to a number of famous famous faces, and has nothing but good things to say about TOWIE's Lucy Mecklenburgh and Lindsay Lohan.
